What is the Inwood Climate & Health Project?
As climate change becomes worse, the health of communities will be impacted. Climate change can have serious impacts on the health of communities of color and low income, such as here in Inwood:
• Climate change is causing more heat waves, which can lead to dehydration and hospitalizations.
• More intense storms and flooding can cause power outages, increase mold presence, and damage homes.
• Climate change amplifies air pollution, which worsens respiratory illnesses such as asthma.
The Inwood Climate & Health Project seeks to develop community-led solutions to climate change related health issues that are unique to Inwood.
What have we done so far?
WE ACT held the first community conversation on August 17, 2019. There, Inwood members identified extreme heat as the issue the community would like to address. We then our meeting of the Inwood Climate & Health Task Force on August 27th, 2019, which included an educational workshop designed to strengthen each participant’s knowledge of these issues. On September 7th, we created an action plan for addressing extreme heat and its health impacts in Inwood with the Task Force.
On Saturday, October 26th, 2019, we’re having a Town Hall from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at a location in Inwood (we hope to be announcing the exact location shortly). During this meeting, we will present the action plan developed with our Task Force to address extreme heat and its impacts on the community, and ask for feedback from Inwood members.
