For years the 135th St Marine Transfer Station (MTS) operated as Manhattan's only 24 hour a day garbage transfer station. In addition to the numerous other toxic facilities in West Harlem, the MTS burdened the community with noise pollution, foul odors, and air pollution from harmful diesel exhaust from garbage trucks.

Several years ago, WE ACT for Environmental Justice, Community Board 9, and a coalition of more than 40 community leaders and organizations led a successful campaign to shutter the facility and begin the process of restoring environmental health in the community.

After succeeding in closing the facility as a trash dump, our attention now turns to redeveloping the space as a community asset. We cordially invite you to attend a town hall on this unique and historic opportunity for improving the West Harlem waterfront.

The town hall, co-sponsored by WE ACT, CB9, the League of Conservation Voters, and the office's of Councilman Mark Levine and Borough President Gale Brewer, will be held on June 5th from 6:30pm - 8:15pm, at Manhattan Pentecostal Church, 541 west 125 street (near Broadway). RSVP here

The event will include presentations and discussions from public officials, community members, and others, and will outline a process for community leadership during and after the redevelopment.

With your participation we will ensure that West Harlem remains at the forefront of community-based planning in the New York City.
