As we enter what is expected to be another hot summer with record-breaking temperatures, our city is fully unprepared to protect its vulnerable residents, despite heat being the number one weather related killer in the city (and disproportionately impacts Black New Yorkers). WE ACT for Environmental Justice is hosting an Extreme Heat Rally on Thursday, July 13th at 12pm in City Hall Park to bring awareness to this issue and call for legislative action to improve our city’s ability to adapt to extreme heat and mitigate negative health impacts. Specifically, we are looking at legislation that will:
- Codify cooling centers
- Preserve New York City’s existing tree canopy
- Set a maximum summer indoor temperature in buildings
- Expand green infrastructure pilots
