The New York City Coalition to End Lead Poisoning (NYCCELP) -- a coalition of advocates, doctors, and lawyers who first came together in the 1980s to create and pass Local Law 1 of 2004. Now, NYCCELP convenes the Lead Roundtable of advocates focused on closing loopholes in Local Law 1 and ensuring lead laws are adequately implemented and enforced.
Although there has been progress since Local Law 1, the ultimate goal of ending childhood lead poisoning has not been achieved.
City Council Committee on Housing and Buildings and Committee on Health are holding a joint oversight hearing on lead paint hazards on April 25th at 10:00 AM EST at City Hall. The last comprehensive hearing on lead took place in November 2019. This hearing on lead poisoning uncovered a lack of enforcement of existing laws. It’s imperative for the City Council to convene this oversight hearing to assess data since 2019; evaluate the effectiveness of enforcement of recent legislation; and to investigate why the progress to end lead poisoning has plateaued.
Join NYCCELP and other advocates for a press conference before the hearing at 9:00 AM EST at City Hall Park. If you are interested in testifying during the hearing, please reach out to Liz Reyes at [email protected]
