Note from Councilmember Sandy Nurse, Chair of the Committee on Sanitation and Waste Management:

"Let's keep the momentum for passing of the Zero Waste Legislative package that mandates residential curbside organics, increases organics composting and recycling accessibility across all communities, and requires the City to meet our 2030 waste diversion goals. Our team has been working hard and are now up to 40-41 co-sponsors on all the bills, which is fantastic news! This shows there is widespread support for setting NYC towards aggressive investments in Zero Waste."

WE ACT for Environmental Justice endorses the New York City Council’s Zero Waste Bill Package and calls for its immediate passage. This bill package will expand access to composting and recycling options for all households in Northern Manhattan, and will set the city on course to achieve zero waste by 2030:

  • Int 0244-2022 (Shahana Hanif (D39)) - Universal curbside composting
  • Int 0274-2022 (Sandy Nurse (D37)) - Tasks the Mayor’s Office with meeting a citywide waste diversion goal by 2030
  • Int 0275-2022 (Nurse) - Requires the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) to report on the City’s progress toward sending zero waste to landfill by 2030
  • Int 0280-2022 (Keith Powers (D4)) - Requires at least one community recycling center in each community board district
  • Int 0281-2022 (Powers) - Requires at  least three organics drop off sites in each community board district
